Year of the Snake.

Remarks at the Eastside Asian Chamber's annual dinner.

Year of the Snake. My grandmother was a Snake. She ran a textile shop in Shanghai through three different governments and a war. When she finally moved here in 1989 she lived with us in a two-bedroom in Bellevue and tried to teach my brother and me Mandarin from a paperback she had brought in her suitcase. We were terrible students. She was a patient teacher.

The Snake is supposed to be quiet and underestimated. That is correct for grandmothers, and also for state legislatures.

Thank you to the Eastside Asian Chamber for the work you do every day for the small business owners in our community, especially the ones who don't always come to events like this because they're closing up at 9 PM and starting again at 5 AM. The state of Washington sees you. So do I.

Congratulations to Madame Wei Lin of Wei's Pho on receiving the Chamber's Lifetime Achievement Award tonight. Pho on 156th forever.

Wishing you and your family a year of health, of good business, and of red envelopes that contain enough.

新年快乐.
