Tomorrow the 2 Line opens for revenue service through the Bel-Red corridor. Ten years late. About $1.4 billion over budget, depending on which audit you read.
I rode the bus to my Microsoft internship in 2010 and thought somebody really should fix this. I am now sixteen years older. The somebody turned out to be a couple thousand Sound Transit employees, ten different mayors of Bellevue and Redmond depending on how you count, every IBEW Local 46 member who hung the catenary, and every commuter who waited.
Thank you to the workers who built it. Thank you to the small businesses that lost parking and customers during construction and stayed open anyway. An apology, also, for how long this took. And one promise: the people pushing to scale back the Sound Transit 3 expansion are wrong, and we will fight them in the next session.
The first eastbound train leaves at 5:14 AM tomorrow. I will be on it. So will my three-year-old, who has been told there's a "very fast train" and is suspicious.
